Congratulations, Metempsychosis! We've reached the eight-month mark! Way to go! ♥♥♥

So, for this month, a simple meme to celebrate...

How did you come up with the names for your characters? This can apply to both their mortal names and their journal names.

Melpomene:
Her human name "Melody Chantry" were obvious picks for her singing affinity. Same for her journal "Inspiredvoice"

Lilith:
Human Name- Ebony Duron. Ebony means dark and Duron means Strength.
Journal name, well I think it explains itself.

Mab:
Maeve is another name for Mab. Windthorpe because it sounded snooty, also it references being the Queen of Air and Darkness
And again the journal name is a bit self-explanatory.

Aphrodite [insanejournal.com profile] venusingucci:
For her mortal name, "Callista" is a superlative feminine Greek adjective meaning "most beautiful." Used substantively, it can also mean "most beautiful woman," or even "I am the most beautiful woman." "Lovelace," despite the obvious indications of love and lace, one dictionary also provides this meaning: Lovelace, Loveless is a surname derived from a surname that was a nickname. Lovelace is the Old English for "loveless" or "heart-whole" or "love lass (love the girls)." However the temptress in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (Mallory's "Morte d'Arthur") gave Gawain her girdle as a "luf-lace" and the meaning may sometimes be "Keepsake" or "Love-token" in the form of a belt. And, since Aphrodite's most famous accessory was her girdle, well, there you have it. As for her journal name, Venus, obviously, is her Roman name. There is a song from the '60s called "Venus in Blue Jeans," but that seemed a bit too rustic for 'Dite, so, being a fashionista, I switched out for the similarly-assonanced designer name Gucci.

Apollo [insanejournal.com profile] aegletes:
"Dorian" is Greek in origin, meaning "golden." "Alexander," also Greek, means "defender of the people," one of the things that Apollo was said to do--and it's a nod to his PB's name. "Cyrus" is Persian in origin, and means "sun." As for his journal name, "Aegletes" is one of his epithets, meaning "Shining One."

Ariadne [insanejournal.com profile] tangledmaze:
"Denise" is French in origin, adapted from the Greek, meaning "a follower of Dionysus." Seeing as she used to be his wife, I thought it fitting. "Stephens" also has its origins in Greek, and means "crowned," appropriate for a princess, and the fact that Dionysus's wedding gift to her was a crown, immortalized by the constellation Corona. Her journal name refers more to her mortal life, when she gave Theseus the ball of yarn to get out of the labyrinth.

Asclepius [insanejournal.com profile] ieter_amumon:
Galen is Greek in origin, meaning "healer." There was also a physician/philosopher in antiquity named Galen, and it seems to derive from this man. "Alistair" is a British version of "Alexander," as explained above. But, more geekily, Asclepius's PB, the glorious Steve Valentine, also does the voice for Alistair from the Dragon Age games--who lent more than a little of his personality to Asclepius. As for his journal name, "iêtêr amumôn" is an epithet used for him in the Homeric poems, roughly meaning, "noble healer" or "good doctor." It's worth noting that amumôn is not an adjective typically used for deities in Greek, and so it's a reminder that he was mortalborn the first time, and is no longer a god in this lifetime.

Bastet [insanejournal.com profile] guardienne:
Katriel is a Jewish name, meaning "God is my crown," which works for a daughter of Ra. "Richmond" means "powerful protector" in German, which was Bastet's primary role in mythology: that as a protector from Apep. This also lends itself to her journal name.

Erato [insanejournal.com profile] roseredheart:
Amanda is Latin, meaning "beloved," "lovable" or "worthy of love." This is very similar to what the name Erato means: "the beloved" or "the lovely." One of Erato's symbols in myth was the rose, particularly a wreath of red roses--her journal name also stems from this, especially with "Rose" as her middle name. "Keefe" is an Irish name also meaning "handsome" or "loved," again playing into the original meaning of her name.

Esther [insanejournal.com profile] queen_of_purim:
"Hada" in Jewish can be taken as a short form of the name "Hadara," meaning "crowned with beauty," or as a short form of "Hadassah," which was Esther's Jewish name in the Bible. "Morgenstern" is a German-Jewish name meaning "morning star," which is roughly what "Esther" means in Persian. For her journal name, Esther was considered a Persian queen, and the Jewish festival of Purim celebrates Esther saving Jews from extermination at the hands of one of her husband's advisors.

Kali [insanejournal.com profile] blackdestroyer:
"Ciara" is Irish in origin, but means "dark" or "black." "Talbot" is often taken to mean "messenger of destruction", but may also have links to the Norman "talebot" meaning "lampblack." Both of which are suitable for the Black Goddess and the Destroyer. Her journal name also stems from this.

Sif [insanejournal.com profile] amberwaveograin:
In antiquity, amber was considered a symbol of wealth as much as any other gem--more so, even, in some areas. Also, it is of similar color to gold, so I thought it appropriate for a golden-haired prosperity goddess. Sif is also associated with grain, and so "Wheatley" actually means "wheat field." In this lifetime, she's an All-American Girl, and so her journal name, in tying in with her symbolism and mortal name, is lifted from the song "America the Beautiful," which references "amber waves of grain."

Triton [insanejournal.com profile] heraldofthedeep:
In French, "Boden" means "messenger" or "herald." "Murphy" comes from the Irish meaning "sea-warrior." Both of which are suitable for the sea prince, who served as his father's herald and lieutenant of his armies. As for his journal name, well, that should be obvious. ^_^

For the sake of posterity, for Ogma here, "Alan" is an Irish name meaning "handsome," which I thought would be appropriate since he was considered to be "sunny-faced." "Cleary" is also an Irish name meaning "learned," which is perfect for our god of learning and literature.

The username is two-fold. Ogma created the Ogham alphabet by writing symbols on the woods of different trees, the first among them being oak. In fact, if you can't acquire the other proper woods, oak can be used as a general substitute for things involving the oghams. Also, oak is a symbol of strength, something Ogma was noted for, and he is tattooed, so there you have it in another sense as well.
